Wayland’s Smithy, Ridgeway
An impressive Neolithic long barrow on the Ridgeway near Ashbury. The D’Arcy Dalton Way ends here. Four immense sarsen stones mark the entrance to the burial chamber.

Odstone Coombes, Ashbury
Strip lynchets along the hillside at Odstone Coombes. The lynchets were accentuated by strong sunshine. The Coombes are a little below the Ridgeway, just off the D’Arcy Dalton Way.

Summer, Devil’s Punchbowl
Red kites above the Punchbowl and bright yellow ragwort on the upper slopes. The Devil’s Punchbowl is just below the Ridgeway near Letcombe Bassett.

Ivinghoe Beacon from Steps Hill
The more distant, flat topped hill in this painting is Ivinghoe Beacon, with the chalk tracks of the Ridgeway rising to its very top. This is the perfect view of the Beacon from Steps Hill. Beside Ivinghoe Beacon, there are two smaller tumulus-topped hills, one more prominent than the other, as seen here on the left.
In 2022, this painting was judged the Overall Winner in the Swire Ridgeway Arts Prize. The annual exhibtion is coordinated by The Friends of the Ridgeway, a voluntary organisation that seeks to preserve and celebrate the Ridgeway National Trail.

Incombe Hole, Steps Hill
One of the greatest rewards of walking up Steps Hill along the Ridgeway is the view down into Incombe Hole. It’s always worth pausing near the top of the hill to gaze down into this steep-sided, lushly green, dry valley.

The Ridgeway, Steps Hill
Walking along the Ridgeway into Ashridge Woods via Steps Hill. My most favourite walk near Ivinghoe Beacon, a perfect combination of chalk downs and woodland. It is particularly wonderful during the spring and summer when the wild flowers blossom. This view is close to the right angle in the Down Farm perimeter fence.

Pulpit Wood
The wood which crowns Pulpit Hill, near Askett and Monks Risborough, as seen from Grangelands Nature Reserve. The Ridgeway makes its way just below the treeline on Pulpit Hill.
In 2019, this painting won Second Prize in ‘The People’s Landscape’, an exhibition of sixty paintings celebrating the British landscape, hosted by Claydon House, National Trust. The judges were James Rothwell (Senior Curator for the National Trust), Mel Czapski (Keeper of Fine Art at Bucks County Museum) and Peter Keegan (Director at The Courtyard Art Studio).

Chalk cutting, Chiltern Hills
The Ridgeway National Trail runs close to this dramatic chalk cutting where the M40 Motorway cuts through the Chiltern Hills.
In 2007, this painting was awarded the prize for the best two dimensional work in the ‘Visions of Buckinghamshire’ art competition at the Bucks County Museum in Aylesbury. The judges were Paul Millichip (British artist, local to Bucks), David Erskine (Exhibition Manager, Bucks County Museum) and Pam Watts (City & Guilds Embroidery Tutor, Missenden Abbey).
