SWIRE RIDGEWAY ARTS PRIZE, UFFINGTON, April 2023
My submissions for the annual Swire Ridgeway Arts Prize, organised by The Friends of
the Ridgeway. The paintings are companion pieces with very similar views of the ridge leading up to Ivinghoe Beacon (far left in both paintings). The Ridgeway connects Pitstone Hill and Aldbury Nowers (my vantage points in these two landscapes) to Ivinghoe Beacon.
Entries will be exhibited for one weekend only, in the village of Uffington, below White Horse Hill. There are four categories for prizes - paintings, photography, sculpture and writing.
You could combine a visit to the exhibition with a walk along the Ridgeway itself. Sites of interest closeby include the famous White Horse, Dragon Hill and Uffington Castle (a large Iron Age hill fort). A little further west, there is Wayland’s Smithy (a Neolithic chambered long barrow) and the striking landscape of Odstone Coombes at Ashbury. Further east, near Wantage, there is the dramatic Devil’s Punchbowl and Segsbury Camp (another large Iron Age Hill Fort).
